Mindfuck

Two nights ago I was watching Videodrome and wondering how little I know about cinema, because this film was reminding me too much to The Matrix.

I loved The Matrix, so I felt a little disappointment when, few year after watching it, I saw the 1998 film DarkCity, not because DarkCity was a bad film (in fact I can say the opposite) but for the apparent rip-off The Matrix seems to do with this film.

In my opinion, both movies lei motives were how reality is conformed by our perception and how our perception conforms reality. The Matrix premise is that, what seems/is real, is a computer generated simulation; in the same way DarkCity approaches the same theme in the dreamscape context.

In 1999 (same year as The Matrix) we had David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ which does the same with videogames, in fact eXistenZ is the freaking same movie as Videodrome (change videogames for television). By the way, Videodrome is a 1983 film directed by… guess who?

David Cronenberg.

By the way I borrow the title for this post from here, where you could find some “mindfuck movies”. Do as me and watch the ones you haven’t yet. Mi imaginary psychiatrist says I’m doing better.
